421 Home directory not available and other file and folder issues

In the last few weeks, we’ve been busy upgrading websites from our old HDD based storage system to a much faster SSD storage cluster.

However, this does mean that all files and folders of all websites have to be copied to the new system, which takes time.

Initially, this was done by taking down the entire server before copying the websites. That resulted in this outage from last week.

To prevent that kind of downtime, the decision was made to not take down the websites, but instead put the accounts in read only mode. This means it’s not possible to create, edit or delete any files, but any files already there are still accessible, so most websites will keep working.

Unfortunately, due to an error, new accounts are also being created on the hosting volumes being migrated. This results in errors like this:

  • FTP: 421 Home directory not available - aborting
  • File manager: not being able to login.
  • Softaculous: something went wrong, please allow 20 minutes then retry

iFastNet expects the migration to be completed later today, which should restore any previously working accounts.

As for what will happen to accounts which have been created or will be created, I’m still trying to get more information from iFastNet about this.

iFastNet has said that missing home directories will be created when the migration is completed later day.
