Lost my domain name

A crazy thing has just happened. I was using the free .cu.cc domains up till yesterday when the website I was building stopped working.

When I checked my account here & control panel I saw that everything was working fine but when I visited the site the server was not found.

mdmpreviewsite1.cu.cc

I checked the domain and have found that http://www.registry.cu.cc/ appears to be gone!
I dont know if it’s temporary, because they have been around for a long time.
I have never seen them down this long.

But I did notice their website had not been updated in years and they were not responding to support requests…

I have never been in this position with a website before so dont know what to do. How can I recover the WordPress site I was building? Is it possible to change the domains?

Thanks in advance.

cu.cc has been broken for a while now so I’m not surprised to see they’re gone. However, I do understand it’s very frustrating if your site got taken down without warning.

However, your website isn’t gone, even if it’s not accessible. All the files and contents are still on your hosting account. Which means you can bring the website back online on another domain.

The first thing to do of course is to get a new domain and to add it to your account. The easiest way to do so is by going to the Subdomains section in your control panel and add a free subdomain to your account. But you can get a domain through other means as well.

After you’ve added the domain to your account, you need to (generally) do two things:

  1. Move your website files to the directory of the other domain. The most reliable way to do so is by using a desktop FTP client like FileZilla.
  2. Update your website settings to use the new domain. The required steps vary depending on the software used. For WordPress, the steps are explained in the Moving WordPress article.

Wow…
I’m really impressed by your help. Considering I am using your free service.

Step 1 worked fine. As it was a WordPress site I was able to see it right away as it was still connected to the database. It’s lucky I was hosting the site with you.

And I looked here for step 2;
https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL
With this hack I was able to log back into the admin. But a lot of the internal URL’s were still set for the old domain.

This plugin fixed that;

Then the log in page kept trying to log into the old url. So I found this;
https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

And now everything looks good and is working.
Thank dude!

You saved my project!

Great to hear you were able to bring your website back! And thank you for including the steps you performed as well, your post should be useful to anyone else with the same issue.

Np…
Looks like cu.cc are back up.
