Use of smtp server

I had hoped to set up a hobby forum on the above which has messaging between admin and members (that works OK) but also email notification to new members when they join the forum.
I tried to make this work using the smtp server of the web site’s email (ultralightforum@hotmail.com) but it doesn’t work.
Is email totally cancelled for free accounts so even an external smtp server cannot be used? Independently of the web site email can be freely received and sent by me on the above hotmail address.

theres a document here for sending smtp mail via gmail, possibly you could modify this to use hotmail ?

Thanks, I have now got email working using the method I suggested. I had typed the server password in incorrectly. I’m a very happy bunny.
